The sunken cost fallacy doesn’t just apply to material or financial decisions. It applies to relationships, communities, jobs, ideologies, whatever.

If you’re really struggling and haven’t been happy for a long time; and you’ve tried all kinds of things to make it work, but you’re not getting anywhere — it…

Unraveling

is not a bad word.

I’m not falling apart.

I’m deconstructing, see?

I’m taking things apart, slowly and carefully.

Laying out all the pieces — examining each one in the sharp,

unfiltered light of mortality embraced.

Looking at the treasures I’ve collected;

jettisoning that which was

laid upon me without my

consent.

And when I begin to reassemble,

I will be the sum of my choices.

And you will finally see me.

And you won’t be able to look away.

I am from women who

clenched their jaws

and did what must be done

while their men failed them (again)

and their children begged for dinner.

From rebels who tried to overthrow regimes of dysfunction

only to install their own.

From faith as a weapon,

and hope as the grease…

When pen meets paper

and heart meets words.

When all I ever wanted disappears,

and I don’t even notice.

When bodies meet each other,

and the melody is born.

This is when I love you.

When shoes caress the pavement,

and window reflections are unkind.

When I remain inside and

In the darkness there appears a single, silken thread of light,

tethered by The Unknowable to this

tiny piece of rock.

Taut, waiting to be plucked

upon the next inhale

of That Which Must Be.

One sweet note reverberates in

the deep echos of

space and time.

My form is a mirage.

The string vibrates

and I appear.

But in the stillness,

I am nothing

but a single

silken

thread

of

light.

Periodically I take long breaks from drinking from the fire hose of social media, and it’s during these times that I realize with great poignancy how little value there is to be found in the constant drumbeat of self-analysis (personal and communal) that has come to dominate public online discourse.
